Better
Health was founded in 1958 by a group of ordinary, yet extraordinary,
citizens who were concerned that the indigent could not afford their medications.
From that simple starting point Better Health has bridged the gap in healthcare
for 50 years. One of these founders, Ruth Peters, served as Executive
Director for the first 25 years, providing assistance from her home!
In 1992, Better Health named its highest volunteer award in her honor.
Her life spanned the gamut from the Army Nurse Corps during World War
II in India to one of the top five North Carolina Senior Citizen Jaycees
in 1987.
Better
Health became a United Way agency in 1959 and was incorporated in 1991
as a non-profit organization under federal law 501(c)3. The agency expanded
to become a full time, full service agency governed by a volunteer Board
of Directors.
